Brentano, genannt Gundel und Gunda, war eine der Töchter des Frankfurter Kaufmanns Peter Anton Brentano und seiner zweiten Ehefrau Maximiliane von La Roche. Von ihrer Mutter schwärmte Goethe nachhaltig; ihre Großmutter Sophie von La Roche war eine bekannte Schriftstellerin.
